I TRY TO LEAVE THINGS A LITTLE BETTER THAN WHEN I FOUND THEM
Ever since I was little I have loved painting and creating – my earliest memory is of drawing a picture. Eventually, my canvases ended up not only being colouring books and pads of paper but almost anything else – clothes, the walls, the floor – even my mums chest of drawers! As I grew up I carried on drawing and painting every chance I got. I learnt to not be wasteful and to find the beauty in everything around me.
25 years later and I am still cultivating those ideals. I am a firm believer in the make do and mend philosophy and love different and original art. After moving away and getting a degree in illustration I have ended up developing a style that puts my ideas down on pretty much anything I find.
When I am not creating you can find me outdoors with my family, or watching black and white World War Two films. I love reading history books and learning new things. My ambition would be to build a creative network which focuses on sustainability, finding ways to benefit my community through art.
Tools and Techniques
How I create my art
I start by painstakingly restoring old items or taking apart pallets and other scrap material by hand. After that I get to work on the pieces using my bench planer, bandsaw, and various other hand held tools, doing what is needed to rejuvenate them and get them ready to paint on.
I combine traditional ways of working with digital techniques, often using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to help design and layout my work. I use mostly paint, both hand rendered and airbrushed, and try to vary my style and approach to keep it interesting.
Finally I clear coat or varnish my work, adding hanging brackets or stands if needed. I brand each piece with my logo and they’re good to go.
What I am good at
As a creative person who sees the values of eco-friendliness and upcycling I can take a piece of old furniture or some scrap and turn it into something unique. I have the ability to see the appeal in things where others can only see junk.
I am very good at listening to you and understanding what you want, and able to create awesome personalised pieces of work for you which will be treasured for years.
I can’t fly an airplane or finish a lot of crosswords, and my singing is truly awful, but I can paint almost anything you ask me. I can use a wide range of tools and equipment to create art, and love trying new and different ideas and concepts.
